James Parmer
Started skiing early age. Both parents worked for a small ski area in New Mexico called Cloudcroft Ski Area. Competed U.S.S.A. with a small ski team while in elementary school. Moved to Ruidoso, NM with my parents to Ski Apache so that my brother and I could attend a larger ski club, coached by Hubert Sigmen from Austria, and continued racing- competing in slalom and giant slalom and making Junior Olympics during my sophomore year at Ruidoso High School. Junior year of high school, a few friends and I from the Ruidoso ski team decided to form an independent ski team within the U.S.S.A. Rocky Mountain Division. This was possible through support that we gained from our community and parents. The first year out of high school, I incurred a wake boarding injury to my knee and during ski season completely blew my acl/mcl at a competition in Steamboat Springs for the US Development Team, ending any aspirations for Olympic team point/selections. While in Melbourne Beach, Florida, meeting Kelly Slater, Jeff Both and Tom Carroll inspired me to take up surfing and skateboarding. Also began playing music. Became interested in Physical Therapy and moved to Tallahassee Florida in pursuit of a degree. While studying, became more interested in Botany and the applications of Botany in therapy as well as applications of Eastern Philosophy to injury. After research determined that Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado was the best program for the study of Ethnobotany and moved back west in 1998 in order to acquire my degree. While attending Fort Lewis College, became aware of the need for a park and pipe program for the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado. Fellow ski instructor/coach Shane Millener and I formed San Juan Free skiing Alliance, a elementary, middle and high school level U.S.S.A. team and competed in the Rocky Mountain Division. 2005 graduated from Fort Lewis College with degree in Ethnobotany, worked as assistant coach to Caleb Martin (US Ski Team) in Telluride, Colorado for the freestyle division of Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club. 2006/2007 season, guest coach for Mammoth Mountain ski club, Mammoth, CA and trained to take over as head coach for their park and pipe program. 2007/2008 & 2008/2009 returned as head coach for San Juan Freeskiing Alliance and trained athletes competing in nationally sanctioned events. In the 2008 US Open of Freeskiing at Copper Mountain, San Juan Freeskiing Alliance coached an athlete, 15, who competed and placed which helped him to gain sponsorship. Class 5 river guide, 10 years on the Upper Animas River. Certifications; USSA alpine inverted aerial coach level 2, P.S.I.A. level 2 park and pipe, First Aid, CPR, and EMT.
